Embedding a link to an external image?

I am looking for a way to add an image link into a PDF (so that the  
image shows up in the PDF), without actually embedding the image.   
This is similar in idea to having an external video file in your  
powerpoint.

What classes should I be looking at, I can't seem to find this kind of  
functionality?
