Yes. Reader can submit FDF files, and this can run a script on
the server. This can be the applet, or can communicate with it.
The communication is in your hands, you only have to be ready
to process a submitted FDF file. The script can return an FDF
file to set form field values.

DDE is not appropriate. Reader can only respond to DDE requests,
not create them. And DDE is not a networkable protocol.
