The PDF Spec says, regarding the PDF operators BX and EX, that "They bracket a compatibility section, a portion of a content stream within which unrecognized operators are to be ignored without error."

Using a PDF page containing operators between BX and EX must, by definition in the standard, generate a viewer- or RIP-specific rasterization without error. Currently we require our customers to re-process such PDF files until all BX/EX operator sequences are removed - though this obviously affects the fidelity of the output. I also understand that PDF/X addresses this issue.

What are the currently acceptable practices for rendering PDF pages containing operators between BX and EX?
