Hi Mark, Thanks for the response. I've been doing some digging (or is that praying) also. I've been able to verify that my MD5 hash is the same as another MD5 hash. For a blank Owner Password .. which then pads the entire padding string ... the MD5 result is: 512147B99E71E575780779A1B6451448 Using the first 5 characters (working on Rev 2 of Standard Security before I even look at Rev 3) and with my arc4 agorithm I'm able to get a binary Owner Password. Looks like the ones I've viewed in sample PDF documents. My next step is trying to get the User Password encrypted with the Enryption Key Algorithm. Looks like fund. Oh, and I have been reading the archives. But like you kinda state ... you really gotta watch what your doing. Very tricky stuff ... but then encryption should be tricky and exacting. I recommend checking out the archives. There's no MD5 output for the default password, but there is some helpful stuff in there. I basically boils down to reading the spec and your code VERY CAREFULLY to make sure you're doing everything exactly right. Anything less than exactly right will just give you noise. Go check out the archives, reread your code and the spec. If your still stumped, I'll see if I can't dig up that hash for you. If you're just worried about the validity of your MD5 algorithm, may I recommend Wei Dai's "Crypto++" libraries: http://www.eskimo.com/~weidai/cryptlib.html Worked for me.
