well, i read a pdf file, manipulate obj streams(thereby changing their length) and write back the whole thing to a pdf file..now i need to change the length and xref table entries, so that the new pdf file works fine..
I was basically looking for how to start..
specifically, whether calculate the object offsets while writing them in to new file and write the xref table from scratch..(in that case linearised files look difficult to reproduce and seems difficult to code) or find the object offsets after they have been written once and then adjust the xref table entries and the lengths, but in this case i need to open the file twice for reading and writing.

I'm not clear what you mean. You have to identify exactly the changes you want to make, then code the changes. Sorry, that isn't a helpful reply, but which part are you stuck on? Or is it something else?
Bear in mind too that you may also be assuming you have to generate the xref table before writing the objects because you are tied to a sequential model. Why can't you do them after writing the objects, by seeking back in the file?
