I always thought that this is actually default behavior of the pdl
constructor.
developer@devbox:~$ perl -e 'use PDL; print pdl([[1],[1,2],[1,2,3],[1]])'
[
[1 0 0]
[1 2 0]
[1 2 3]
[1 0 0]
