I've examined Opera in the past. One reason it is faster is that it
completely ignores HTTP specifications that limit the number of connections
to each server to 2. I have seen Opera open a new connection for every
image, as many as 15 at a time. As such, if everyone used Opera, it would
surely overload servers that are expecting only 2 connections max per
client. Servers have a limited number of connections. Obviously, if you
have a very slow internet connection, the extra socket connections to the
server will each be running very slow, and cause a lot of backups at the
modem<->internet connection point, which could actually make things slower,
since when these network access servers get too many packets (due to limited
buffering), they start dropping untransmitted packets, and you might
actually get slower response at times. And, the speed you see may be
causing a very high, but unseen cost on the internet infrastructure.
I don't Opera for these reasons.
Cheers,
Gerald
