Fred, I'm with you 100%.  Startling and frightening birds and
other creatures for a photograph is inappropriate and rude. 
There are many, many wonderful bird photos taken without
flash.  How much better to learn the subject well, and learn
how to properly expose for different lighting situations, than
go bursting forth with with a "light cannon".  

Photography, IMO, is about understanding and relating to one's
subject, in what can be an almost symbiotic relationship at
times, and certainly always one of respect and caring.  It's
not only about getting the photograph.  Flash is invasive in
many situations.
