I'm pretty sure that for most birds the flash is not what frightens them - it's
the movement
of the photographer. I say "i'm pretty sure" because there may be a number of
exceptions
to this. This is something I gleaned reading stuff about bird photography (LL
RUE?,
Eric whats-hisname?) but I have occasionally used flash to try to capture
beasties and
whilst a cat may get pissed off a bit at a close range flash, the few birds I've
photoed
seen oblivious, or at least not disturbed, by lighting changes. See Porter's
bird photos
for some lovely ones using strobes. If the flash causes reflection in such a way
as to
appear to make something move, though, that would be another matter.
