Thanks for the scan, Bill - now I can (literally) see what you mean.

My personal hunch is that it's indeed a reflection "off the front of the lens 
and then to the subject", which is then reflected back by the inside surface 
of the filter.  (And, as you also likely suspect now, my hunch is that it 
would not have appeared if you had left the filter off.)

The candle ghost is sort of "cutesy", I guess, but I personally find it a 
little distracting.  (However, your subjects might be just simply enthralled 
by the apparition - <g>.)

Visually, the reflection would seem to be dimmer than the reflection off the 
picture in the left upper background caused by the candle in the right 
background.  I guess the SMC treatment on the lens and filter were a ~lot~ 
more effective than the uncoated picture glass (<tongue in cheek>).

You said that "the 50 1.4 didn't do it, but the 77mm did" - did you have a 
filter on the 50?  (Or, is this a "Special Feature" of the 77 Limited?)

By the way, the photo is a nice picture of that couple, Bill - a good 
composition, in my book.
