I would like to clarify a few things regarding the recent
disclosure that Lycos seems to be using theft as a tactic to
make their photo site better. A couple of my images are up there
also, so I am in the same boat as everyone else.
I am looking into methods of making web harvesters pass the PUG
by, without impeding the legitimate use of search engines, which
I think is useful.
I have sent an email to Lycos telling them they are in violation
of copyright regarding my images and that I want them removed
from their site. I would recommend that anyone else who has like
feelings do the same.
This does bring up an interesting point, however, and one I
have made before. It is pretty much impossible to maintain
copyright when you post to the internet. Policing would have to
be a more than full time job, and still, you will not catch all
the violations. This is one reason why we have image size
restrictions in place on the gallery.
The PUG's position is to not condone theft of images from
the gallery. However, it is up to the individual submitters to
maintain vigilance regarding unauthorized use of any images they
submit to the gallery. As a member of the PUG community, I
appreciate being informed of the Lycos theft of images. I think
we pretty much have to look out for each other regarding this
matter.
Thanks
Bill
