This pretty much the case everywhere. A significant percentage of these top of the 
line cameras are used as P&S. Those with the financial means often want the "best" or 
what they perceive as best. On national day, I see countless of EOS-1 with 28-70/2.8L 
hanging around people necks and can actually see in the way they treat their camera 
that they are snapshooters (not that theres anything wrong with that). Now for these 
people the "best" is what the pros are using - this is where they get the exposure for 
these products and the brand is recognized.  This also where the problem for an 
expensive Pentax camera starts; its only the informed who actually cares what the 
camera does. As you say, many of these people doesn't have a clue so even if a 
hypotetical Pentax should be better, they will still buy a Nikon or a Canon (not even 
a Leica because it demands a higher level of knowledge in order to recognize the 
brand) because its the best. This is branding at work and these cameras are bought as 
status symbols.
