Any decent half face respirator with ammonia cartridges will work just fine.  However, 
the whole key is the fit of the respirator. There is a very exacting procedure to don 
and fit a respirator to ensure you have a good seal on the face. And it has to be 
sized correctly.  If by a mask you mean a paper dustmask type (filtering facepiece), 
no, these will not work for ammonia.  Ammonia and other similar gases (amines, etc.), 
require an absorbent cartridge. Typical dust masks are not fitted with these, though I 
have seen some with small charcoal cartridge for organic vapors and/or 
pesticides....these are not approved for such use by regulatory agencies though, but 
they are out there.
