Disheartening, isn't it. I once had a 'hair in the gate' which gave 
similar results to my current real problem. A hair becomes lodged in the 
aperture between the scanning lens and the neg (or indeed slide) causing 
a streak of lovely colour on the scan. The giveaway is when it happens on 
every scan, even with out neg in the holder! Mind you, this now happens 
with my real fault. The difference is that I could blow the hair away 
with some air, unlike the current fault :-(
