Sometimes I think they put vestigial tripod sockets on new
cameras. They don't seem as deep as in the old days.

A couple of suggestions. One, as others have pointed out is to
build up the pad thickness. Another method would be to put a
shim on the back side of the head to effectively shorten the
screw. A washer of suitable diameter would do the trick.
Thirdly, and if all else fails, put a 1/4x20 nut onto the bolt
to hold it firmly in place, and take a grinder to it and shorten
it. When you take the nut off, it will clean up any metal burrs
left behind from the grinding.
