Mike,
Your comment reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask you, but it
could just as well go to anyone else on the list who's been involved in the
photo magazine business. From time to time, we see questions/comments about
the future of conventional photography, the sizes of markets in various
countries, the impact of a particular country's consumer base on business
expansion plans, etc. It seems to me that one way to ensure the continuing
vitality of *any* business is to get young people interested very early on
in life, and a good way to reach young children is through niche magazines.
For example, I regularly purchase annual subscriptions for nature, wildlife,
and general science magazines for my grandchildren, and I know I'd purchase
a children's science/ nature/ photography magazine subscription for them if
a good one existed. Are you aware of any publishers interested in this
specialized market? Not sure if you could talk advertisers into
underwriting this type of publication -- they might instill some brand
recognition, but they'd probably have to view it as primarily long-term
investing for eventual market growth.
Just curious if you (or anyone else in the business) have ever given this
any thought.
