For those who are interested in the details: My Norton AV caught it and reported it to be the W95MTX.dr virus, which is described at http://www.hig.se/~dhe/security/sec00/WarnVirus.htm as follows: "This virus is spread by E-mail to Windows 95 systems. If you receive double E-mails, even from people you trust and communicate with often, then WATCH OUT! The second E-mail (which comes 2 seconds after the first and contains no subject or text) contains just one attached file. This attachment can have different names such as BILLGATES.JPG.PIF, TIAZINHA.JPG.PIF, FUCKING_WITH_DOGS.XXX, JIMI_HENRIX_MP3.XXX, etc. DO NOT DOUBLE-CLICK ON THE ATTACHMENT!! Doing so will unleash the virus. You must delete the E-mail containing the virus and then direct your E-mail reader to permanently delete the E-mail and it's attachment. If you run Eudora, this can be accomplished by clicking Special/Empty Trash to get rid of both the E-mail and the attached file which contains the virus. You should then run an antivirus program such as Norton Antivirus (used at HiG) or F-Prot. Make sure that the antivirus program has been recently updated so that it can catch this new virus. If you have already double-clicked on the attached virus file, then DO NOT send any more E-mail! Your E-mail reader will appear to run normally but you will send virus-attached files to all the people you correspond with (making them quite angry). Unfortunately, the W95.MTX.dr virus will also damage your Win95 operating system, causing it to behave strangely. The warning "Program XXX has attempted an illegal operation" will pop up unexpectedly and some windows will crash, causing you to loose the document or mail you were just writing. You will probably have to reformat your C:-drive and reinstall Win95 from scratch!! " It is also described at Symantec at http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000091516080306&src=n Maris ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Harris" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, February 07, 2001 8:15 AM Subject: Re: TIAZINHA.JPG.pif attachement is a virus | Norman Baugher wrote: | | > I got it too.
