Dof Preview??

Hi,

OK, i'm stuck on something which i assume should be relatively easy.  can
some one explain to me how i use the DOF preview, when i press the button
the screens goes darker, the amount of darkness depending on what aperture
i'm set too. But how this relate to seeing what the DOF will be?
