Dr. Routh,
Far as I know, Pentax is still making the FA135/2.8.
There's not much point in owning a lens if you're not
going to use it for fear of it getting damaged, in my
opinion.
You have insurance, don't you? Check the policy. Your
personal gear may be covered even on vacation.
A 100/3.5 lens with a 2x converter is not going to
compare to a straight 135mm. The focal length will be
wrong and it will absolutely eat light, especially since
you will be stopping down to give yourself a decent
chance at a sharp photo. So, you can't really compare a
200mm at,say, f11 or f16 to a 135mm at maybe f5.6 or
even f8, not to mention how much more easily the
1355/2.8 will focus, either automatically or manually.
A 100/3.5 lens even without the 2x is not the same, as
the FA100/3.5, neat little lens that it is, is not in
the same class as the FA135/2.8.
Obviously, I can't tell you what to do, but my sincere
advice is to stick that FA135/2.8 in the bag and take it
with you. Even if, heaven forbid, something does happen
to it, there are still plenty of them around.
