Thanks, everyone, I feel better now. Presumably, then, what matters is
the position of the diaphragm, and so long as it's in a part of the
barrel at least as wide as the maximum aperture required, all is well.
I suppose all the light ends up in a space 36mm x 24mm anyway, so it has
to get squashed pretty small at some point!
