I believe the phrase I used was "don't necessarily expect great
things," which I think is a reasonable warning.  I'm not saying that the M
zooms were of poor quality.  I'm saying that any time you put a TC on a
zoom lens you will lose some quality.  This applies even for new AF lenses
today, so I'm sure it applies at least as much to the M zooms, which were
made in the early days of zoom lens design.  I then said that it really
depended on how picky you are.  Some people will never notice the
difference (myself probably included), while others will see it every
time.  If you're happy with the results, great.  It doesn't mean that
everyone will be, hence my warning.  If you hadn't mentioned that you were
unhappy with a previous TC/zoom experience, I might not have even thought
to warn you that it's possible that the zoom could have shared some of the
blame with the TC.
