It really depends how you meter. If you are using a gray card to good effect it 
should be OK however this method isn't suitable for TTL flash :-)

Given that you mentioned that you are considering mixed exposures of natural 
light and flash (with hopefully some predictability) then you could calculate 
exposures and run some test rolls. However an investment in a good meter that 
can handle mixed lighting would be usable in most any lighting situation to 
provide instant and accurate measurements.

Not a bad investment for anyone seriously interested in photography. Also if 
you buy a used Gossen or Sekonic it would not be too difficult to re-sell 
should it prove ineffective for you.
