Sorry to bother with this OT message. However, it's all for the
benefit of work on Pentax photos...

Please reply off list.
(I would very much welcome replies that are not merely guessing.)

Bought a second hand P-166 w 128mb ram. Windows 95. Two hard drives.

I have started getting mostly blue screens, "fatal errors", "access
violation" and such.
(Very often including vxd at "mcscan", "win32" and at a unit?
"0028..." something, if this means anything to anybody.)

I have run virus scans, scandisk and some registry cleaners to no
avail.

There is a number of installed programs that I want to keep on using.
I have no original CD:s for these programs. This means I want to avoid
having to reformat the C-disk.

However, I don't know if my problem is software or hardware related.
This is what I first want to find out.

Questions:

If I reinstall Windows to a new catalog, say "Winnew" (and keep the
previous original "Windows" folder alongside it, but not in use), just
to check whether the basic hardware is stable, will I then be able to
reinstall Windows to the original "Windows" folder and get my original
Windows
setup working again?)

Anybody knows how to temporarily turn off a McAfee virus program? I
don't want to uninstall it, just temporarily shut it off from running,
particularly during boot,
to see if it helps. This program is a suspect in this case.
Can I turn it off in the registry somewhere or in some ".ini" file?

I would also like to completely "zero" my modem and internet program
and connections - and install everything from scratch - how do you do
this when Internet Explorer won't unistall?
(When connecting by modem to my ISP from two different computers with
what seems like identical set-ups and installation, Outlook Express
can't find my mail account and IE can't show any web pages.)

I would also like some advice on the possibility of temporarily
"turning off" (not uninstalling) the network installation now
present. This computer used to be part of a local papers network.) I
want to keep the possibility of using the installed network programs
at a later time.

What are the chances that a reformat of the C-drive, will render a
second hard drive unreadable. What are the chances moving a (non C
hard drive) will render it unreadable? (Will any other
Windows-computer be able to find and read it properly?)

Can I use my present C-hard drive as a regular (non C-) hard drive in
another computer (that is, simply pull it out and put it in another
computer)?

Any suggestions on other troubleshooting procedures are welcome.

Thanks,
Lasse
