But will they be sharp enough for most people? I'd suggest that very few digital users will want to get large (>11x14) prints from their equipment. Even the godly PJ's, shooting mainly at the level needed for newspaper reproduction, would be happy with lower sharpness levels than a critical print-maker.
In addition, I think it might be valid to say that lens designed down to a price which makes entry-level DSLR's fit the affordability criteria expressed by some here, may not meet the level of sharpness/resolution we are used to with 35mm to date. Is there not also a trade-off between the amount of detail captured and the resultant file size? Would this not mean that compromises are already made with digital capture so that a reasonable number of frames can be captured on the media used? I recall that when 126 film was introduced, a very large number of very inferior lens were used on the mass-market cameras which used it, and there were only a few good quality models to be found until much later, when for example, the Contaflex 126 was introduced. I am supposing that we may very well face a similar philosophy with the advent of lower-priced DSLR's. It is my firm hope that Pentax will make a good quality DSLR, with a full range of lens covering the 35mm equivalents of 15 - 600mm, but also with the possibility of using an adaptor to allow the use of existing K-mount lens, so that the affordability of a useful system does not put it out of the range of the average keen amateur. IMHO, pro's will afford it whatever it costs, if it will contribute enough to the bottom line: depreciation and leasing options do help, even if you haven't got an employer to buy it for you!
