I printed some turn of the last century portraits for the local archives a while back. 8x10 sheets, the pictures were of some of the local Indian Chiefs from the late 1800's. I am pretty sure I have a picture of Sitting Bull around the house somewhere now. I made sure that I had one "flawed" print from each negative that I couldn't sell. This really turned me on to the idea of large contact prints. Even though the negatives were close to 120 years old, and on a nitrate substrate that wasn't optically perfect (and quite dangerous to work with), the prints had detail and tonality that would be next to impossible to match even today with a small format negative.
