Perhaps the whole camera industry would turn out to be like the PC industry. There would only be a very few chip makers survived, and eventually dominated by 1 or 2 companies (like Intel vs Motorola, nVidia vs ATI). Then all the camera makers would be like motherboard or graphics card companies, they just custom made their products based on the chips provided by the same manufacturers. So it wouldn't be much different from film based products where Kodak & Fuji are the major players. Camera manufacturers just custom made their cameras for the same type of film. Except, the R&D cycle would be much shorter (for digital products) than what it used to be.
