My Depth-of-field preview use:
I am one who prefers a camera that provides a depth-of-field preview method.
I was disappointed in the ME Super for a lack of same.
Macro work, particularly the kind I do, requires preview to ascertain that
the image has adequate depth of focus. (e.g.
http://whitemetal.com/thread/hw1995/RealRiders/vette_95_01.htm SMCT 4/50mm @
f/16 and flash) I use the right angle finder and eye-level magnifier and
bright modeling lights to assist in seeing the frame while stopped down.
I also use it very often in regular situations when I care to control the
depth-of-focus. Many images benefit from having the background isolated
from the main subject (e.g.
http://whitemetal.com/kids_09_2000/rrradiofly_09_2000_02.htm SMC-A 2.8/135
probably wide open or nearly so). Other times I want "everything" to be in
focus. (e.g. http://whitemetal.com/kids_09_2000/hangar_08_2000_01.htm SMCT
4/300mm @ f/16, 1/500-sec). In all instances, the d-o-f scales can be used
to get a feel for it, but a visual check often helps with selecting a final
lens opening.
All of this is, of course, much easier when using a tripod and shooting at
leisure...
