In America, each car sold has to have government tested and specified miles
per gallon ratings for city driving, highway driving, combined driving.
In the advertisements that list these, they caveat the numbers with "Your
mileage may vary", meaning you may not get the rated MPG, because early on
the testing was done in a way that no one got nearly as good a mileage
result as the ratings. Today they are more accurate.
It is a way of saying: "we can get this item to perform this well, but you
may not".
