For the past few months, I've been having my color prints developed at Dale Labs of Hollywood, Florida. Most of their business is mail order.
Some of you may recall that back in the 80s, PhotoGraphic magazine rated Dale Labs one of the 10 best color print labs in the United States. I seem to recall reading that Sports Illustrated used them at that time. Dale's color correction rivals that of my former lab, Ace Photo of Sterling, Virginia. But they have it over Ace in the quality of their scans: unlike Ace, Dale color corrects each scan; not just each print. What's more, the scans are 6.4 megapixels--more than twice the resolution I used to settle for. As a result, I spend much less time tweaking my images in PhotoImpact. Though it's not mentioned anywhere in their website or order forms, they'll happily push process for $2. True, I have to wait more than a week to see my prints. But the results are worth it. The scans are so rich in detail that I can select a 15 percent fraction of the image and still have about a million pixels to play with.
