Do think about it some...
You need open aperture only for critical focusing.
Once you get the focus, close it down for metering.
It's true that the long lenses lose a lot of light, and that makes
some metering systems hard to see properly, but at least you don't
have to focus stopped down!

It is a shame to lose open aperture metering, I'll agree, but
sometimes it's a less expensive way to go.
