If you ask me, I'd say what Pentax need is an array of high quality consumer
zooms, which have never been the strength of Pentax systems. Canon, Minolta
and Nikon have been offering and selling these zooms for many years, and
that's what most people wanted. But Pentax just stay with low quality zooms
which nobody wants.
