It sounds like you need to change the fonts or at least their sizes.
I've used 1600 x 1200 for a long time and it's plenty readable, after
you convince Windows or X or whatever that you want to use the extra
real estate for smoothness rather than cramming more stuff onto the
screen at the same time.
