Mark, I can only tell you that from my lab (Agfa D-Labs) that the quality seems to be on par with a well printed inkjet. That is based on Herb Chong's test comparing it to an Epson 1270.
The software they use is www.fotowire.com. You choose the lab you want (in this case Snap Photo Imaging), and then upload the photos. They send them back printed on the D-Lab. I don't know what kind of equipment some of these other labs use, so can't really comment on them.
