Color film renders things as they are. BW renders them in a multitude of
grays. There's a certain beauty to be found in looking at the world with
a different kind of vision, a different palette. And there's the
challenge of foreseeing how ordinary color scenes will appear once
they've been distilled down to shades of gray. Of course, there's also
the darkroom where we create the final image with light, hands waving
through that space between lens and paper as we dodge and burn, shape
and cajole. BW photography is, in many ways, a higher calling.
