Fact is, neither have I, although I have not the slightest idea what keeps them out! Including the heavy rain... "regular" chimneys have sort of a catch basin area, as I recall, near the bottom. I suppose that would catch a lot of the stuff falling thru the chimney... When there's a fire, the answer is obvious. When there's not...what happens to all the water? Darned if I know. No, I've not seen a single British style chimney pot on a chimney in the U.S. Oh, maybe I had seen one here, in all my years, but paid so little attention to it, it just sailed on by.
