I don't think that you need different flashes flashes for the Canon. The problem with the Nikon is that the flash TTL meter measures the light reflected off the film, which no longer exists. Interestingly, the Fuji S2 can do TTL flash with any of the Nikon TTL capable flashes.

the newer Nikon flashes have some new control features that only the
digital cameras can control. different sensors in the camera and on the
flash both figure out exposure based on a preflash.
