This sounds like good advice.  As a consumer, I agree with returning items
that show signs of shoddy worksmanship.  While it's true that the lens may
perform adequately, if it's bad enough that it would reduce the resale
value of the lens, then I feel that the store (and the manufacturer)
shouldn't have sold it at full price in the first place.  If you're happy
with the photos it's producing, keep the lens, but ask the store if they'd
be willing to refund a portion of your money in lieu of the defect.  If
they're not, then get them to exchange it for a clean sample.  The bottom
line is that no lens should be sold as new if it has anything wrong with
it that will affect its resale value, regardless of whether or not you
intend to ever sell it.  Manufacturers need to have their attention drawn
to things like this.
