Good quality black electrical tape will hold a battery door closed.
Doesn't look as tacky as elastic bands although you do have clean the
glue residue eventually.

I agree that it is a design that doesn't inspire much
confidence. Pentax USA sells the part for about 6
dollars, and isn't real hard to change. I am now
careful when changing batteries to not stress the
latch. I replaced mine about a year ago, and so far
so good.

The latch on the AF280T seems to be a design flaw, the
plastic fillet that keeps the
tongue in place is too thin and fragile. I'm yet to
think of an effective repair
without fitting an external latch of some sort or
resorting to elastic bands!
