In order to prevent misunderstanding, I want to clarify what I
said above. My belief is that, in general, lens performance is
not improved by putting a filter on the lens. It really doesn't
matter which brand of lens, Canon, Leica, Minolta, Nikon, or
Pentax.

Filters are usually used to subtract something from the light
entering the lens. Unless a filter is absolutely perfect, it
will usually degrade the resolution and sharpness of the lens.
The amount of degradation can be anywhere from negligible to
noticeable but, it will be there.

So, my statement should have been: Using a filter on a lens is
not going to improve the performance of the lens.

Having said all that, replacing a poor filter with a really good
one can improve the pictures produced, if you absolutely,
positively must use a filter. It still won't improve the
performance of the lens. It will just degrade it less.
