Oh, another thing I forgot to mention about the Saunders 4x5 enlargers...I
don't know how many people are interested, and I suppose it's
off-topic...but anyway, there is one more great advantage of a 4x5 Saunders
for 35mm photographers. The glass 4x5 carrier is constructed in such a way
that you can lay strips of 6 frames so that the sprocket-holed edges
overlap, and, in this way, fit 9 frames into the area of the 4x5 carrier in
a 3-over-3-over-3 arrangement. You can then print this just as you would a
4x5 negative, on to 8x10, 11x14, or even 16x20 paper. Do this four times,
and you've easily and quickly made enlarged proof prints from an entire roll
of 35mm. Even printing 9 frames to 8x10 is the equivalent of making a 16x20
proof sheet. I used to make enlarged proofs on 11x14--the equivalent of
making a proof sheet from a rol of 35mm 22"x28" in size(!)--and it's very
nice. At that size you can dispense with making workprints.

Warning: don't try this unless you can keep doing it, because it very
quickly gets addictive to look at your shooting this way. It's very
luxurious.

You can't do this with other brands and makes of 4x5 glass carriers, since
none of them will accomodate longer film strips without crimping them.

FWIW,

--Mike
