My wife is a systems analyst for a major insurance company. She and her fellow employees were told the company wasn't competitive, profitable, or able to keep its head above water for much longer�layoffs had to be made. They cut 15-20% of their workforce (amazing how many of those let go were within a year or two of retirement).
A few weeks after the layoffs, the company newsletter was raving what a great year the company had and how they were in very good shape�especially compared to their major competitors.
