Does anyone else have troubles getting good color balance when scanning Fuji
Superia 400?
A more general question: what is your favorite print film for scanning?
I recently bulk scanned a bunch of rolls of film before sending my scanner
off to my pop.
Here is the film types I scanned:
Fuji Super HG 1600 (3 rolls)
Fuji Superia 400 (2 rolls)
Fuji Reala 100 (1 roll)
Konica Impressa 50 (2 rolls)
Kodak Supra 100 (1 roll)
The Super HG1600 seems the best, especially when shot at night without a
flash. The pictures often need very little color correction, even when the
predominant light is incandescent. The Superia 400 on the other hand, under
the same outdoor/night/incandescent situation shows larger yellow shifts,
and requires a fairly extreme amount of correction compare to HG1600. But
in daylight, the Superia 400 is clearly superior to HG1600 (which has a
tendency to wash out too easily).
I know many people on this list rail against HG1600, but for scanned night
shots, it does a truly amazing job of capturing the light. I was especially
impressed with the 2400d dpi 36-bit scans from HG1600.
As and aside, the Konica Impress 50 scans very nicely at 2400 dpi, and when
printed at 720dpi, produce a flawless 3.5" x 5" print. It would be a
wonderful film to scan at 4000 dpi. Reala tends also to get some slightly
bizarre color shifts under incandescent lights, but also would render well
at 4000 dpi. HG1600 seems to be close to its limit at 2400 or 2700 dpi.
What are other's actual experiences and opinions with scanning various 35mm
print films?

Gerald
