   I suspected that much over the years - Pentax didn't introduce for
   fun the D encoder in the KAF mount protocol fifteen years ago.
   It would be interesting to know if these details come from Pentax
   or are the result of authors' own observations.
   Despite carefully planning my own experiment with the MZ-5N and FA
   50/1.4, I was not able to get reproducible results. Indeed there
   were subtle changes in exposure with varying the subject distance,
   but not always the same, and apparently only the program mode
   showed somehow consistency. This made me suspect the distance is
   rather used in the green program of cameras like MZ-6, MZ-7 and
   MZ-10, to detect when to switch between landscape, portrait and
   macro profiles.
