I suspected that much over the years - Pentax didn't introduce for fun the D encoder in the KAF mount protocol fifteen years ago. It would be interesting to know if these details come from Pentax or are the result of authors' own observations. Despite carefully planning my own experiment with the MZ-5N and FA 50/1.4, I was not able to get reproducible results. Indeed there were subtle changes in exposure with varying the subject distance, but not always the same, and apparently only the program mode showed somehow consistency. This made me suspect the distance is rather used in the green program of cameras like MZ-6, MZ-7 and MZ-10, to detect when to switch between landscape, portrait and macro profiles. Servus, Alin
