When the Nikon D1 came out it was the first time that I saw a number of pro Canon shooters thinking of going to Nikon. When Canon released the D30 pros snapped them up. They thought the body felt cheap and the AF sucked, but it was the only game in town and plenty good enough. You have to remember that most pros are commercial/studio/wedding shooters and not PJs in combat. Although ruggedness is a nice "warm fuzzy" it's not a practical necessity.
I don't follow Canon sales on ebay. The number of minty F100s and F5s for sale at low prices is amazing (I saw a mint F100 with a BIN of $700 - very tempting. I'm really holding out for a nice $200 F3. )
