In times of high demand, you can see the cables sag as they warm up and expand between pylons. Birds use them to keep warm. Considering the number of accidents we have when digger operators cut local power lines with a measly 240V in them, it's probably best that they are 30m in the air. Although, I bought my first motorcycle from the widow of someone who was flying a control line plane near to one of the 400kV lines....... mike
