Thanks for the insight, James. I'm also learning on my own. Of course, if I thought it were a complete drudgery, I'd use T400CN and drop it off at the nearest supermarket. As a beginner, though, my brain says, "get me the best pictures possible" but my eyes see endless combinations of film and chem. So many choices, so little time (money).
Currently, I'm working with D76 1:1 or 1:3 on Ilford HP5+. This seems to suit my style at the moment, which can probably be described as people-and-things-outdoors-but-not-necessarily-planned. Load up the camera, go for a walk with or without family/friends/pets, and look for interesting subjects, concentrate on composition and exposure, and snap, snap, snap away. Develop.
