I have heard that it HSM is not quite 100% as good as Canon/Nikon, which again suggests it is their own design, but it 99% there. Nobody knows how good OS is yet, although Nikon VR is supposedly nowhere near as good as Canon IS, so I guess this is a difficult thing to get right.
