Thanks, Steve< i use a LowePro Street and Field Rover AW. it is one of the few photo backpacks out there that has half photo section and half regular backpack to carry everything else that one needs on a hike, unless you have a partner who is willing to carry all your food, most of your water, and most of your clothes, etc. LowePro also has a variation that doesn't have the AW cover, and the Orion backpack which is a detachable backpack with a large Orion waistbelt pack. fewer places to attach gear to the harness or belt though. i think Tamrac makes one too, and i vaguely recall one other. everyone else's photo backpack is fully padded throughout and basically has no room for non-photo gear. two very important recommendations: 1) the backpack must carry your tripod in the center. anywhere else and you will ruin your back. 2) fully padded backpacks weigh a lot when empty compared to a partial padded with room for your non-photo gear. beyond about 8 miles round trip, i don't use a photo backpack and use a regular hiking daypack by carrying less gear. that means an ultra compact tripod, fewer lenses, and minimal accessories. Zing padded cases inside a small canoeing drybag. Herb....
