Agreed, in a way, although what you're talking about it also almost a philosophical position of some very influential photographers. Garry Winogrand said "I photograph to see what things look like photographed" or words to that effect. In a sense, a lot of the interest of "straight" photography is the transformation between things seen and things rendered; there's always interest for me in the tension between how I expect certain photographs will work and how they actually do work. A lot of my favorite shots were just toss-offs, nothing I thought twice about when I shot them.
