I used a Canon 8mm Camcorder with their OPTICAL image stabiliser. No
obvious loss in resolution (expectations aren't high with 8mm video) but it
did give a rock steady image handheld at 10x zoom. A great feature - the
rest of the camera was pretty flimsy and put me off the brand.
I don't even know if we're talking about similar technology for still
cameras but if we are I'm sure that there would be lots of times when
handholding a long lens at slower shutter speeds would be a welcome return
for a slight loss in res. On the other hand I believe that other systems
used digital stabilisation methods with higher resolution loss which would
only work with digital cameras - are you sure that that's not what you read
about.
